I found a friend that shares my displeasure with either:
a. Front license plates
b. the stupid and fragile way front plates attach to the cruiser.

no grill guard
being seen in public

Look closely at the banged out front bumper too. I tell you what though, I couldn't show my face in public with a bumper attached grass guard like the one on the right.

I've never lived in a no-front-plates state, so cars without a front plate look unnatural to me. Especially on cars, like these Landies, where the bumper has a plate-holder included in the design. It looks like something is missing.

Nah I was talking about the badge

I have never lived in such a state either. I had one on there, but the mounting system is poor, so it started to fall off on a trail a few weeks ago so I took it off.

HAHA! yeah, the fact that this was an option was hilarious. IF mine wasn't the 40th anniversary with blacked out badges...the original owner would have probably gilded theirs too.

One of my best freinds recently bought a mid 90's 4Runner. I keep telling him he shoulda got a Land Cruiser (your gen.)
Fuck fuel economy. Those things are badass.

It's so weird that that was a thing in the 90's. My friend's 4Runner that i mentioned in another comment also has the gold badges (and is white.)
Growing up, my mom bought a 1993 Toyota Camry Station Wagon brand new from the dealership. My mom really wanted a wagon but because of the rarity of that body style, she was forced to get one with gold trim.

I think the 55 and 62 series look better, but you can't beat the 1-2 combo of modern and tough.

Gold all the things! Because: Luxury?

Everyone knows only ballers drive Camry station wagons.....

Depending on what generation 4Runner, the FZJ gets around the same mileage :(

Carriage bolts work for the front plate!

yeah, thats what I had. In fairness it would have worked fine but I didn't lock them.

Lets see...I think his is a 3rd gen. And I know he bought the version that had all the 4wd goodies including shorter gears for towing. However, he bought it from out of state (I drove him because i'm a good friend) and we calculated mileage on the way home. That thing did 22mpg on the highway, which is more than i'd expect from a Land Cruiser.

Definitely a 3rd gen. I average 12 in my second gen, city and highway.

Mine survived fording a river and hitting a ditch, so it was pretty tough.

I have noticed going through photo dumps of car shows I have attended that despite the mandatory front plate laws here in NE, most of the cars at the shows, sports cars especially, don't have them.

for whatever reason, whenever I did deep water it would bend the hell out of my front plate. Bend it forward.

Mine only did that at a car wash.

Both look in fantastic condition. A rarity indeed.

The one on the right looks a little more beat up inside that mine, but these trucks are getting old.
